BD-theme 1.0 beta 1 released

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

I've finally found the time to make the necessary fixes and improvements to the theme of my blog.
I decided to not name it a final release just because I could not test it with Internet Explorer 6. I believe that the differences with this beta release and the final one will just be some test with that browser and a better code cleanup :-)
Valid XHTML 1.0 Strict.
Yes, this is the theme you're actually seeing in the blog.
You can go and download it!

A valid xhtml strict version of extending text plugin for wordpress

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

I began today to check my theme pages for passing W3C's Validator test against XHTML 1.0 Strict. There is still some work to be done before it will be ready but I would like to share with you a modified version of the very useful Expanding Text Plugin for Wordpress, which lets you to create blocks of text in posts or which either expand or collapse when clicked on. I really like the plugin, but I noticed that it does not produce valid XHTML tags. Here is a light modification of the plugin which outputs valid XHTML blocks: dd-expanding-text-valid-xhtml

A test site for BD-theme

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

I set up a site for testing my theme on a fresh installation of Wordpress. This immediately brought very interesting results, as I always tested my theme on my blog which had customization/plugins I could not remember.
Nevertheless, I'm going to use this test site for validating the theme against W3C's HTML and CSS validators.

The site is up on http://test.bd-things.net/

Just released the code for the 0.9 version. Changes from the experiments of 0.8 are listed on the project page, but the most important ones are that the theme is now fully compatible with

  • Internet Explorer 7 and 8
  • Mozilla Firefox 2
  • Mozilla Firefox 3
  • Google Chrome
  • Apple Safari

And there are lots of visual improvements, too. Go to see them on the project page, and grab the code, too!
Obviously, coding for the 1.0 release has just started, and you will see the changes in the theme applied on my blog.

BD-theme 0.8. The Experiment

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

As I promised more than 2 months ago, I've just released the sourcecode of the wordpress theme on my blog. BD-theme 0.8 is a set of experiments that will bring me to the final release, I cannot promise that it will work perfectly on every browser, but it will almost do the job. Meanwhile, I'm working since 7 days to the next release, 0.9, that should bring to the blog a final layout.
UPDATE 2008-08-22: The theme you're actually seeing in the blog is what will become BD-theme 0.9. I'm testing it.

gOS 3 Gadgets (Beta) Review

Saturday, August 9th, 2008

Time for a review. Thanks to the always useful DistroWatch.com service, I discovered a new Gnu/Linux distribution, called gOS. gOS stands for Good Os, born in 2007 in California. The version I'm reviewing is the so-called "gOS 3 'Gadgets'", their third release. gOS 3 Gadgets BETA is based on Ubuntu 8.04.1, and the final release is to be expected in the next 1-2 months.
This distribution is built around Goggle apps and services, comes with Google Gadgets for Linux pre-installed, as well other nice programs, like Google Picasa, Wine, Mozilla Prism for Google web applications and Wbar as launch bar. I've never heard about this bar, it's very quick and light. Good choice! The distro also includes proprietary codecs for multimedia content.
